6 Tips To Save Money On Commercial Fleet Repair Costs

by Phillip Herrera

If you want to reduce emergency commercial fleet repairs and cut down the overall cost of repairs, you may want to integrate some preventative measures. To save money in the long run, check out these tips.

1. Look for Specialists

Instead of taking your fleet to a regular mechanic, consider looking for a company that specializes in commercial fleet repair. These specialists understand the unique needs of commercial clients, and they can often offer services like multiple mechanics on staff or fast repairs.

In some cases, these companies may offer you a bulk discount. In exchange for agreeing to have all your vehicles serviced there, the company may be willing to charge you less than you would pay if you booked the services one-by-one through a small mechanic.

2. Keep Up With Regular Maintenance

To avoid emergency repairs, it's critical to keep up with routine maintenance. Ideally, your service company should check on oil and other fluid levels as well as brake pads, alignment, and belts.

3. Have Drivers Check Tire Pressure

Tire pressure is a something your drivers should be able to check on their own, and it can help to make a big difference. Excess or too little pressure can cause the tires to wear out prematurely. It also adds to your overall business expenses by increasing gas costs.

4. Ban Idling

Idling wastes gas, but more importantly from a maintenance and repair perspective, it wears out your engines sooner, and that can lead to unnecessary repairs or replacements. Instruct your drivers not to idle. If they are sitting at a railroad crossing or stopped anywhere else for longer than a minute, they should turn off the engine.

5. Offer Driver Training Focused on Vehicle Protection

To further avoid emergency repairs, consider offering your employees extra training. Driving techniques can have a big impact on the car's overall wear and tear. For example, slamming on the brakes repeatedly can wear down the pads faster. In addition, with the right course such as a defensive driving course, you can help to reduce crashes, and by extension reduce expenses for collision repairs.

6. Plan for the Seasons

At the beginning of each season, you may also want to take steps to prepare the vehicles in your fleet. For instance, at the beginning of winter, you may want to put on snow tires to reduce risks of crashes. At the beginning of summer, you may want to make sure the cooling equipment is working on every car in your fleet so you don't have a spate of overheating engines.
