Understanding How A Body Shop Becomes Approved By A Vehicle Manufacturer

by Phillip Herrera

Most people do know that if they own a luxury vehicle, it is best if they look for a body shop that has been certified by the manufacturer. However, most consumers have no idea how it is that these businesses gain their certifications. For example, what does it take to become a Maserati-certified body shop? The road to becoming certified by a luxury auto manufacturer is not the easiest thing to do. Here is a look at some of the things that may be required before the body shop can be granted an approval by a specific manufacturer.

The body shop must utilize manufacturer-approved tools for repairs.

One thing many consumers do not know about a manufacturer-approved body shop is even the tools that they use to work on the vehicles have to be of a certain quality. For example, Maserati just approved a full line of a certain type of tools to be used in body shops that work on their vehicles, according to Body Shop Business. This goes to show just how stringent luxury car manufacturers can be about certifying a shop and stating it is equipped to work on their line of high-end vehicles.

The body shop must have technicians that have a certain level of training.

It is always important that the body shop has technicians that have been properly trained. However, some luxury automakers will actually make it a requirement that the technicians in the shop have a certain level of training before they will give the shop their seal of approval. Technicians may be required to have completed a degree program at a trade school, go through a special training program specifically for the type of car, or meet other educational or training requirements.

The body shop must have experience working on the specific vehicle.

Overall, the body shop must have experience working on the vehicle from the manufacturer that is giving their approval. Experience often comes in the form of working on prior customers' vehicles, but the automaker may also require that the technicians in the body shop work alongside their own team of professionals for a period of time or do some work in another shop that has already been certified. Luxury vehicles can have a lot of differences when compared to a regular vehicle, and having properly trained technicians in a certified repair shop will mean everything to the outcome of the repairs.
