Replacing Your Windshield? How To Keep It In Great Shape

by Phillip Herrera

If you have a windshield that is damaged, you are going to want to replace it as soon as possible. Once you replace your windshield, you are going to want to ensure that you follow the right steps right after the windshield is installed in order to ensure the quality of the overall installation process. Here is what you need to do after you have your windshield replaced in order to keep it in great shape.

Don't Drive Right Away

When you get your windshield replaced, the process doesn't take that long. However, that doesn't mean that you should get your windshield replaced and just drive away. Instead, you are going to want to wait for a while and allow the adhesives to completely set and dry. How long you need to wait will depend upon the adhesive used; that is why you are going to want to talk to your technician to determine what adhesive they used and what the recommended wait time is.

If you are going into the auto glass shop, bring a book or something to read. If the technicians are coming to you, you are going to want to ensure that you have something to do at the location where they are meeting you for about an hour after the appointment so you can allow the adhesive to sit.

Keep the Weight Down

If you usually use a sunshade inside or outside on your windshield, avoid using your sunshade right now. You don't want to use your sunshade right away; it may not seem like that much, but adding that extra weight while the adhesive is still curing could impact the overall quality of the windshield installation. Keep your dashboard and windshield clear in order to allow the new windshield to cure.

Crack Your Windows

Next, it is important to crack your windows at least a tiny bit overnight. It may surprise you, but when your windows are shut, the pressure increases inside of your vehicle and puts pressure on your windows. You want to avoid this when you have new auto glass in your vehicle. You can greatly reduce the pressure by just cracking the movable windows a few inches.

Wait to Wash Your Vehicle

It is important to wait to wash your vehicle after you have a new windshield installed. A car wash puts out a lot of pressure. Even a garden hose can release excessive pressure on your vehicle. That is why you should wait a few days after you have a new windshield installed.

If you are getting your windshield installed, and you want to keep it in great shape, allow the adhesive to dry for a little while before driving. Keep the weight down in your vehicle. Crack your windows overnight. Wait to wash your vehicle for a few days. Doing these things will protect the integrity of installing your new windshield.
